Kenya Power confirmed late Thursday that supply disruptions were affecting most of the country.

Unprecedented flooding has plunged most of Kenya into darkness, leaving a large parts of the country without telecom and internet services. 

Power supply issues, which resulted in an internet blackout on Thursday, are the latest setback for the East African country following recent weeks of flooding that killed over 180 people. 

As the toll rises, Kenya Power announced late Thursday that supply outages are affecting the majority of the country. 

Excessive rain damaged some infrastructure, causing blackouts in various cities and towns, including Nairobi, Eldoret, Kisumu, Mombasa, Nakuru, and Nyeri. Authorities referred to phenomenon as a "system disturbance." 

At the time of publication, Kenya Power stated that supplies had been restored in several areas of the country.

 "The restoration of the rest of the country is in progress," the utility said. The power outages have disrupted connectivity. 

NetBlocks reported that its metrics revealed a severe disruption in internet service across much of Kenya, with countrywide connectivity down to 56% of normal levels.

 "The incident corresponds to widespread power outages after a 'system disturbance on the grid' per Kenya Power," according to the statement.
